A full exam checks your vision, prescription, eye pressure, retina and early signs of glaucoma, cataracts, diabetes and macular degeneration — for every age from infants to seniors.
Your exam begins with a conversation about your health, vision history, medications and lifestyle — how you use your eyes at work, on screens, driving and in sport. We then measure your prescription with automated pre-testing and a precise refraction, check your eye pressure with comfortable no-touch tonometry, and assess how your eyes focus, track and work together as a team. Next comes the part most patients remember: imaging. The Optos Monaco combines ultra-widefield Optomap photography with high-resolution OCT in a single scan, capturing both a 200-degree view of your retina and cross-sectional images of its layers. Your Doctor of Optometry reviews the images with you on screen and explains every finding in plain language, so you leave understanding exactly what is happening inside your eyes. Because we image the retina rather than dilate for most patients, you can usually drive and return to work straight after your appointment.
Eye disease rarely announces itself. Glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration all begin silently, which is why our Vancouver clinic invests in diagnostics that catch change years earlier than a basic sight test. Optomap ultra-widefield imaging can reveal retinal tears, tumours and diabetic changes in the far periphery of the retina that a routine check can miss. OCT provides layer-by-layer scans of the retina and optic nerve — the gold standard for early glaucoma and macular degeneration detection. Virtual-reality visual field testing makes glaucoma monitoring faster and more comfortable than the traditional bowl test, and our Firefly digital slit lamp with meibography photographs the oil glands responsible for most dry eye. We direct-bill most major BC insurers, including Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife, Green Shield Canada and Desjardins, so most patients pay only the difference at their visit. MSP covers eye exams for children under 19 and medically necessary visits — including eye emergencies and diabetic eye exams — for all ages. Usually not. We use Optomap ultra-widefield imaging and OCT, which give a comprehensive no-dilation view of the retina for most patients — no blurry afternoon, no light sensitivity. Your optometrist will tell you if drops are still medically necessary for your case.
Plan for about 30–45 minutes including imaging. Contact lens fittings, dry eye workups and myopia assessments are booked with additional time so nothing is rushed.
MSP covers eye exams for children under 19 and medically necessary visits — such as eye emergencies and disease monitoring — for all ages. Routine adult exams are typically paid privately or through extended health plans, which we direct-bill.
Bring your BC Services Card, your extended health card for direct billing, your current glasses or contact lens boxes, and a list of medications. If you’ve had eye imaging elsewhere, previous reports help us track changes over time.
